| Water Miscibility |
 |
DME is of polar, water miscible nature. To form a single clear liquid phase aerosol composition, a maximum of 34 weight percent DME is miscible with water and a maximum of 6 weight percent. Water is miscible with DME. In between these borderlines the blend form liquid phases, see figure.

How to avoid separation This phase separation can easily be avoided by adding a third polar solvent. Especially ethyl alcohol is a very good and effective co-solvent for Dimethyl ether / water mixtures, see ternary diagram. If one adds a minimum of 6 weight percent ethyl alcohol, all blends of DME and water will become a single clear liquid phase. A ternary diagram for blends of ethyl alcohol, water and dimethyl ether gives more detailed information.
